What do you like about the deal? I see it as probably an overpay now but the 5 year deal with no player option brings upside for the rockets if Jabari can improve and be a solid starter.

I usually just look at the play by play section of the players page which shows both stats. We may just be using the same term for different stats. On court net rating was 2.0 and on/off was -7.1 www.basketball-reference.com/players/g/gr...

So that +/- is the game by game +/ when he is on the court (independent of outcomes when he is off the court). I was referring to on/off , which is how much better is the team’s net rating when player A is on the court vs off. I am unsure how to look at the on off in a limited game sample page.

That must be team net rating when he was on the court not the on off. He had a -7.1 on off rating according to bball reference. He would have had to average a -45.5 on off for the first 20 game which can’t be possible.

Stone may disagree, but Green’s plus minus has been pretty negative every single year of his career. There may be some noise year to year but a 4 year sample size is pretty large. I just find it hard to look past that, especially since it has been more negative as the team gets better. Thoughts?

As you were saying, I think that is role thing as there are probably more redundancies with Jabari vs the rest of the team compared to Jalen vs the rest of the team.

I mean his assists per 36 have been between 3.8 and 4.0 the last 3 years. I know assists isn’t the end all be all but I have seen minimal evidence that he has grown much as a playmaker.

Yeah that is fair. I was thinking the marginal utility of a two-way forward is higher than a primary scorer with minimal creation and efficiency concerns.
As you say though they are easier to find theoretically. I guess my viewpoint is Smith is more likely to contribute to winning

You said Green has a higher ceiling than Smith. Green isn’t really a playmaker or def guy so how do you think he can reach a higher ceiling with only scoring? While Smith does not have the scoring potential as Green but could be a solid 2 way player which i think is higher ceiling than a scorer
