"Sir Keir Starmer, whose critics label him "never here Keir" because of the frequency of his international trips"
Seriously? How does Mason expect the PM to represent the country's interests internationally? Over Zoom?

I've finally managed to finish it after many months (that's on me and a few days holiday did the job) and it was thoroughly enjoyable. I generally find history a bit dry but you made it totally accessible, even for me.

University of life, mate, university of life. Following graduation from the school of hard knocks.

Not to forget that you needed a banking history with the building society. You couldn't just apply to any old place for a mortgage.

I'm 61, in the 70s in the west of Scotland, people of my age were done. Utterly wrecked.

One building burned down and there's retrospective action to inspect cladding on other buildings, so yes there's an issue with cladding on *some* apartment blocks. It's far from universal as your post implies. There's also plenty of room to build but the NIMBYs don't want anything new nearby.

Maybe you did but it's all nonsense apart from the pricing part.

UK running out of room? What? Where? Let's not confuse resistance to development with lack of room.

Did you see that groups of "veterans" begging for drinks on the Wetherspoon app is a thing?
November 9, 2025 at 4:18 PM
Oh my.
I'm looking for an occasion to open these.

I'd need to stop being Scottish enough.

Paris? Seriously? Car drivers there are angels compared to many cities. Cyclists on the other hand ...

You couldn't move Glasgow to the 10th while I'm still there?

Could be worse. I never really regained by sense of smell after COVID and pretty much everything is quite bland, so I'm in a place of knowing what I could be tasting. It's a loss.

West of Scotland here, yep.

It reminds me of a Warrant Officer who declared that he had no interest in a late-entry commission because he's rather be a king amongst shits than a shit amongst kings.

I'm loving the number of clairvoyants in your replies, every one unwittingly confirming the point.

Scottish here and I'm often assumed to be Belgian when I speak French. I suspect they don't mean Walloon.

Because the Tories would have turned round and said "fair cop, gov", right. Right?
October 26, 2025 at 10:39 AM
To answer the question you posed, a commission is fancier because it's signed by the monarch, whereas a warrant is signed by the SofS for Defence, at least in the UK

No, the obvious question is why they would propose such blatant cruelty. Questions of practicality are open to an inference that the proposal is otherwise reasonable if it weren't for the logistical challenge.

You know that data is 6 years old? Given the rate of progress in EV uptake and deployment of charging infrastructure, I'm cautious on giving it too much credence.
October 23, 2025 at 10:58 AM
That's the problem with sweeping statements, one size doesn't fit all. In some rural places it's absolutely fine, in others not so much.
October 23, 2025 at 10:37 AM
I live in a rural area and it's ideal for an EV
October 23, 2025 at 10:20 AM
That changes everything.
