I just used my stick blender. Though I should get a separate blender for crafts lol.

I made a paper mache pumpkin this year. If you are still having a hard time with the ridges, you can soak egg cartons in water blend it up mix it up with glue and use that as a paper clay coating and it helps smooth them down a lot.
