52. Octopath Traveler 0

This 95 hour monster should be the gold standard going forward for premium adaptations of mobile games.

The OT anthology format is back with a refocus on villains leading to some extremely gripping arcs and a True Ending finale that will stick with me for a long time.

51. Pokemon Legends Z-A

The superior pokemon subseries is back at it again boys.

Really liked the active combat and the return of Megas.

I liked how parkour heavy it was especially the further along you got.

50. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond

8 years in development hell and it fucking SHOWS.

Great individual areas and music but Yeesh at all the GFed/Sylux stuff.

One of the most baffling endings in a Nintendo game

Kensuke Tanaba will not see the light of heaven.

Great review as always, James!

Though, I don't like my odds of beating this in time for my top ten list...

49. Dragon Quest 2 HD2D Remake

Dragon Quest 2 has historically been my easy pick for the absolute worst DQ game.

They went ahead and turned it into one of the best ones? With amazing pacing and combat and fleshed out characters and storylines???

I'm stunned.

Legit a top ten contender for 2025.

48. Dragon Quest 1 HD2D Remake

Pretty good remake of the grandaddy of all JRPGs.

I think they may have overtuned the difficulty a bit but I still had a great time revisiting this bad boy.

What truly shocked me however, is what came next...

47. Fateful Findings

My first full Neil Breen experience. Potentially the hardest I'll laugh all year.

Absolute Cinema.

46. Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles

Great version of a classic! Loved the new dub and the quality of life features made the game sooo much less grindy overall.

It truly be like that today. Happy beezy!

45. Isles of the Emberdark by Brandon Sanderson

I finally caught up on the Cosmere!!

I had a great time with this one. Fun lore and characters and a very enlightening look into the future of the cosmere.

My mans really said Fuck Colonialism with his whole heart and I'm here for it

44. Start Again Start Again Start Again: a Prologue

Fun little one sitting prototype, looking forward to the full game.

Fun little one sitting prototype, looking forward to the full game.

Fun little one sitting prot-HELP-type, looking for-ME-ward to the full game.

43. Ace Attorney Investigations 2: Prosecutor's Gambit

Absolute Cinema.

This game hits the ground running and literally does not let up until the credits hit.

This feels like a true, final, celebration of the DS/2D sprite era of the series and nails that vibe while telling an amazing story.

42. Wind and Truth by Brandon Sanderson

Words fail me. This series continues to be a masterwork in worldbuilding, thrilling action and carefully crafted emotional drama.

The wait for the second arc to start will be GRUELING but I relish more Mistborn.

Adolin Kholin my forever GOAT.

41. Golden Idol Investigations: The Curse of the Last Reaper

You got Obra Dinn all over my Golden Idol!!

Definitely one of my favorites from this DLC series. A fun central gimmick and impeccable vibes.

Will be here day one for the inevitable Golden Idol 3!

40. Strange Antiquities

Great followup to Horticulture. Fantastic upgrade in terms of complexity and atmosphere. Always want these games to be twice as long as they are but ultimately what's there is aces.

39. Hollow Knight: Silksong

Basically a guaranteed lock for my GOTY pick.

Most great games have that One great sequence that's memorable and ambitious to the point its all you can think about.

This game has at least 5 of those.

100% True Ending at 50 hours. Absolute masterpiece.

38. Kirby and the Forgotten Land: Star-Crossed World

Great little expansion delivering the EX style levels I was missing from the series since the 3DS games.

Plays and looks great and has eldritch horrors the way only a Kirby game could.
September 1, 2025 at 3:51 PM
37. Miles Edgeworth: Ace Attorney Investigations

Finally getting back into AA!! This one had some pacing/structural issues but I still had a blast just being back in this silly world.

Final case was an insane rollercoaster. Cant wait to finally play the fan-favorite sequel!

36. Strange Horticulture

Rose has been telling to play this for years now and damn do I regret not jumping on this sooner.

Hits a near constant train of mystery solving dopamine while having a fun little story and terrific atmosphere.

Ended up being perfect timing too, since the sequel is soon!

August 13, 2025 at 4:52 PM
35. Momodora: Moonlit Farewell

I ended up liking this a bit less than it's sublime predecessor but this series never dissapoints when it comes to smooth gameplay and aesthetics.

It's a shame they did away with the boss reward system from the last game it really made the challenge super satisfying.
