Very relatable. Had the same reaction when I first bought it. The minimalism was scary + convoluted. You had to learn where things were hidden instead of simply having everything right there. Plus getting used to gestures instead of just clicking things.

It took a few months but I got used to it.

My mom went through a phase of buying them. I'm not as into orange as she is, but we both seemed to like them? Never noticed it being bland.

Since everyone else is giving game suggestions. Klonoa if you like platformers, and Magic Pengel if you want to try a cute monster battler with a fun gimmick. I also liked BG2:Dark Alliance. I agree the .hack games are fun but idk if someone who's not a fan of the franchise would like them as much?
