Drought exacerbates general bird declines. Climate projections show 4-5x increases in annual drought frequency by 2050-2080 for these desert regions. Desert birds may be living on the edge of their physiological limits, and increasing drought threatens to push them over.

Key findings:
• Severe droughts cause 18-34% abundance declines in vulnerable species
• 9 out of 38 species showed strong negative responses
• Even common desert birds like Northern Mockingbird and Gambel's Quail are impacted
• Open water habitat can ameliorate some negative effects

Hi I’m Zack, I’m an ecologist 🌏 studying biodiversity & wildlife; effects of disturbances (e.g. fire) and global change on their distribution and populations. Mostly birds and bats but all critters are interesting.
