Disasters don’t care about politics, but politics can choose to care about disasters. Communities should want to be more resilient - having the ability to bounce back after a disaster - and rely less on federal aid. Republican states actually already get more FEMA aid.

In Texas, effective alerts may be even more important than in other places. A RAND Corporation study shows Texans are more likely to opt out of emergency alerts than other states. Effective alerts not only help people make decisions, but they can prevent opt-outs.
