What they do is not politics as it should be because, on an even playing field, these jokers would be laughed out of the room by serious people.

A certain class of people are willing to pay lots of money to projects that push conservatism, sow fear, and spread hate to distract from the continual exploitation of labor and extraction of wealth. They are/were not smart, they are/were well funded.
