Making a Halloween costume every year since I was a kid. They can be elaborate or simple, but they have to be mostly DIY (combining purchased elements is OK), with bonus points for cleverness. Growing up poor but industrious, Halloween was the great equalizer of holidays. Always worth the effort!

Am I America? My father had relatives here going back to Plymouth Rock. My mother immigrated here from South America. The ultimate American story, maybe, but my parents wouldn’t recognize this country if they were still alive today. At least half of me seems deeply unwelcome.
