The photo shows part of a 3d model of Glasgow Cathedral and surrounding area, including some other buildings, a couple of roads and lots of trees. It's a bit of street art or maybe a 3d map that stands on a plinth by a wall near the cathedral. It's made out of copper which has turned green with age. The very tip of the cathedral is still copper-coloured however, as people must constantly touch it and that's worn away the green patina.

The newly restored Notre Dame Cathedral looking wondrous.

A view of the inside of the newly restored Notre Dame Cathedral. It's taken from a very high angle (a balcony above the nave I presume). The nave is filled with the workers who restored the cathedral, several hundred in total is my guess. The cathedral looks wonderful!

Day 28 - Blue planet

This started as a simple map of CalMac's routes (Scotland's beleagured national ferry company) but it morphed into an homage to vintage travel posters.

Day 25 - Heat

Tanning salons in the Glasgow area.

I feel compelled to add that I've never been in one of these places in my life. I mean, premature ageing and skin cancer... ewww 😳

However it was a fun topic for a map.

This is the Dunfallandy Stone located just outside Pitlochry.

Sorry for not great quality on the photo showing the cross side. It's very difficult to photograph as the glass picks up reflections, and you're basically shooting into the light. But I did my best! 😉

Text from an information sign about the stone. It reads:

Welcome to the Dunfallandy Stone

This elaborately-carved stone was raised here more than 1,200 years ago as a symbol of faith and power.

Marking a place of prayer, the stone was set prominently on a mound once topped by a chapel. Its carved designs show the sophistication of Pictish culture, mixing influences from across the British Isles and Europe with local traditions and beliefs.

A coloured stone?

Some scholars believe it possible that sculptures like this one were once coloured. Pictich artists may have used mineral pigments like yellow ochre, red lead and green verdigris to echo the style of contemporary metalwork and illuminated manuscripts.

The information board also contains some illustrations of what the cross might look like if it were coloured and gives some further information on the carvings on the stone.

Day 24 - Circles

Decided to incorporate the 'circle' theme into my map too, so here are the locations of Scotland's stone circles.

The small circles around the coastline were the easiest thing to create thanks to #inkscape 's Distribute along Path feature.

This is East Linton, a village about 25 miles east of Edinburgh on Scotland.

Went for a vintage kind of style, but didn't quite have the time I'd hoped for to work on it. Ah well 🤷‍♀️

Day 19 - Typography

I may have gone a little over the top with this one but I regret nothing.

Day 12 - Time and space

This is the village of Drymen in Scotland, located near the south eastern end of Loch Lomond. The maps show how the village has expanded over the last hundred years.

So, here's my first update, beginning from 31st August:
Distance walked this week(end) : 17 miles / 27km
Distance remaining : 1171 miles / 1884km
I had fun making a little map of the route in #QGIS and can't wait to see that red route slowly turning green!

There are two maps shown in the image, and they are titled 'Lands End to John O' Groats virtual walk'.

One map is of the whole of the UK mainland with a trail in red running from the south west of England to northern Scotland. The trail has 100 mile markers along it.

The other map is a close up version of the Cornwall area showing the same trail. A small part of the trail is green, showing the miles walked.

There is some text at the bottom summarising the distances walked, which are 17 miles / 27km, out of 1188 miles total / 1907km.
