Writing notes for the next Sonic Destruction scene
The monster truck design goes for big mouth small eyes, but the eyes are still designed to be cute. Big iris, looking very rich. Kinda like a horse or an elephant. Honestly if I designed Jumba I would base him on a baby elephant, because of those eyes. Also he has the same body proportions.

Even Yoda has a similar mouth to eyes ratio, which they messed up in the phantom menace. the yoda puppet's mouth was way too wide, and ended up destrying the cute factor, so they redid it with cgi. That's why later movies like wall e and short circuit use those proportions and that focus on eyes.

It's weird looking, but you see those big eyes, and i think most people in the 80s were like... yeah it's a weird little freak but i like it, which is why they went to see the movie. It would be a massive marketing issue if the main design on all the posters was offputting

I think most people find yoda to be automatically pretty cute just on design alone. He's a little old man with beady eyes and a stick, people find that adorable. ET's head design, the proportions pull strong on cute archetypes, and the eyes in particular are designed to be cute.

As for venom (specifically the movie version) that's a little more fair since i don't expect you to pay attention to the venom movie fanbase, but just so you know they find him adorable and the movies write him to be cute. Making breakfast for eddie, looking around all big eyed when he's scared.

As much as i don't like that the how to train your dragon live action movie is just a shot for shot remake for no good reason, they at least have toothless looking cute with realistic rendering. This is the job.

I mean come on, tons of successful movies had weird freaks, realistically rendered, that people found cute. Some of them aren't even biological.

There are so many examples of animation that is realistically rendered looking cute. They're not forced by the rules of nature to make it offputting. It's not a documentary, jumba and pleakley aren't real animals, and even if they were, making cartoons of them doesn't force you to avoid cuteness.

Humans find weird things cute all the time. And character designers making cute or appealing designs is their bread and butter, even realistic ones. That's literally part of the job from day one.
