(Also cranky that the past 10 years -- which feels like 100 years, for so many reasons -- have made me have to pay attention to Freud. I cheat, by reading Adam Phillips on Freud, but still, it is a lot.)

I am *tired* of having huge parts of our political life taken up by people who should sign a contract with a pro-dom(me) and exercise their kinks with them, instead of having their kink become their politics.

Since I am a fan of Peter Eisenmen, rowing, and dancing, the first paragraph in particular could have been written for me.

I had to look up their website again, because I was like, "Wasn't that the one that confused me a couple of months ago? Counterpart to the Federalist Society? What?"

fwiw the first time I landed on the ACS website, I had to research them to figure out whether they are cranks or some kind of fake organization. This article is the first time I've heard them mentioned in the same breath as the Federalist Society.

It's why I have an emotionally outsized reaction to the kind of bad rowing where people overuse their backs and underuse their legs in order to feel like they are Doing Work.

O interesting. I know about some of their work (mostly to do with protests) but I don't know what else they do.

It reminds me of service outages I've worked on where people will do everything but sit down and analyze the problem for 15 minutes. Rebuild every docker container in the stack? Sure! Remind ourselves what happened the last time we saw the problem? Hell no.

I think this because I know people who think they are talking about politics when what they are doing is responding to politics by shitposting. We don't always know when we're engaging with fantasy rather than fact.

Toulmin and Janik never answered my question, which is, "How did people not know that, at scale, they were taking refuge in fantasy instead of dealing with facts?" Based on now, I suspect the answer is that a lot of them thought they *were* dealing with facts.
