A brilliant student is doing their craft presentation on Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” which means I get to come into class with the rock I received when I was nominated for the Shirley Jackson Award so we can have an immersive reading experience of that one scene😆🪨 @sjacksonawards.bsky.social

Came across this article today about the UK adopting the Zimbabwean mental health model of Friendship Benches. I wrote about Friendship Benches in my book Drinking from Graveyard Wells but gave it a magical realist (psychological horror?) spin haha

Thrilled & humbled that my short story “Home Became a Thing with Thorns” is featured in an anthology alongside Kafka, Alice Walker, James Baldwin, Hemingway, Gabriel Garcia Marquez & more! Wow what wonderful company of classic & contemporary fiction

There is a cool writing fellowship: in exchange for a grant you write 10k words a month for 12 months. There weren’t a lot of resources/info on the app so I interviewed author Mubanga Kalimamukwento about applying to the MMF fellowship on my Substack

Happy Thanksgiving! Recently watched Simone Biles documentary, there is a moment when her mom brings out her quilt and it taught me a lot about writing, dedication to one's craft, rejections, & gratitude. Here are my thoughts on what writers can learn from it :)

This heart-to-heart conversation took place over the span of a year. Shingai & I talked about AfroSurrealism, your younger self as a kind of ancestor/spirit guide, & navigating disillusionment with publishing & the world

Been meaning to start a Substack, the grief of this week finally made me write something, to “go to work” in troubled times as Toni Morrison calls us to. Here is my first offering: lessons from two ancestors as an antidote to despair
