I talked with the IGDB team a few years ago about it. Conclusion being that genres are broken and fluid anyway and the only way to get something aligning with general consensus is to have something like steam's tagging system. But then you get overcorrection as well, like sport games tagged as coop.

Nintendo's marketing department calls Mario an adventure game. It is very hard to use them as a measuring stick when they optimize for SEO and other tricks to get the game to show up in as many contexts as possible.
