From me for the @australiainstitute.org.au live blog: why we don't need to toll EV owners to make the fuel excise "fair". This is in response to an AFR article yesterday which, to be fair, has some nuanced arguments.

I wrote something for @australiainstitute.org.au
blog this morning on AUKUS, highlighting one of its main military and strategic implications - threatening China's nuclear deterrence.

With due respect to the AFR editorial board - at what point does the mantra that "it's more complicated [than your little brains can comprehend]" become a battle-cry to rally around existing orthodoxy in defiance of evidence?

@joshuablackjb.bsky.social and I and I put together this piece (our first collab!) on the appalling 'Chinese spy' beat-up in recent days. It was a great pleasure working with a fellow historian and an outstanding writer. live.australiainstitute.org.au/category/aus...

#auspol #AUKUS There are now 3 independent candidates for the lower house (including 2 MPs) calling for inquiry into AUKUS. The UK parliament has already launched one

This sort of foreign policy questioning from the press pack is absolutely abysmal, and it limits political leaders' answers to formulaic statements, which aim to avoid controversy rather than provide substance (Dutton's response was about as reasonable as one can get).

For @australiainstitute.org.au live blog: Is Trump going to start demanding protection money? Somewhat surprising this hasn't been given more attention in the mainstream news in the West. (Thanks to a friend who brought this to my attention) Read the post here t.co/02TO6RYRTM

The astute @amyremeikis.bsky.social picked this up. The MP in what was once Robert Menzies' seat, calls for review into AUKUS. In 1966 Menzies called the US-AU alliance one of his proudest achievements, but he had his doubts!

Had fun writing this for our live blog run by @amyremeikis.bsky.social: is there something to China's 'do nothing and win'? To be sure, they are doing stuff, but we need an accurate picture of what it is.
They aren't relying on luck, and neither should Australia (shout out to Donald Horne here)

On @australiainstitute.org.au live blog: why Peter Dutton is wrong to use China's example for nuclear power here.
Like nuclear powered submarines, just because something is "best in the world" doesn't mean it's the best option for Australia.

Hardly ever discussed: why would the PLA-N go all the way up to Australia's doorsteps if they want to cut intercontinental cables? Wouldn't it make more sense to do it in some remote waters?
And are we forgetting we still have satellite communication?

Looking into Chinese discourse on foreign policy and realising they're unironically saying this, though ofc expressed somewhat differently (often in idiomatic Chinese, for a start)
