I'm from an American small town that left a deep impression on me, for good & bad. Small towns are mythologized as corn-pone utopias in U.S. culture, but they're also places people want to leave. I wrote about small towns on my blog during the first Trump term:

The U.S. has spent the last 40 years nurturing a culture that deems immediate self-gratification to be the only true measure of "freedom." Is it really a surprise, then, that Americans were so willing to shuck collective values like democracy and public health when goaded on by a con artist?
