Or this one: a monolingual Anglophone nurse hears a patient speaking unintelligibly, assume it's delirium, until an L2 English speaking nurse recognises the language. The dying person isn't babbling; they've reverted to a mother tongue at the end of life.

There's something almost funny about how sometimes it's easier for L1 users of other Englishes and L2 English users to get a clearer (and more analytic) sense of that ontological conflation.

Exactly. And, paradoxically, this very much goes back to the kind of sneaky conflation of very different types of "we" in the kind of professional English in question. Is it the editorial one? The authorial one? The generic one? The pseudo-inclusive one?

So much to say... but also so much still to investigate, to move away from arbitrary personal convictions imposed as authoritative, to a more systematic framework that can help colleagues not just understand the injustices/inequities, but also what pragmatic and best practices could be implemented.

So much this. Plus, proficiency in written academic English should in no way be simply assumed to be linked to a particular kind of proficiency in *speaking* English, or even using spoken languages at all as L1. So many layers of linguistic ideologies, so much unnecessary stress, anxiety and -
