I just looked it up -she originally published in 2010 under a pen name and she republished it under a new title after heavy revisions in 2021, so maybe it did suck. But a weird thing to not discuss in the paper?!

I don’t remember that particular MacAlister book, but I’ve read enough of her catalogue to comfortably call this a wild misreading. Her writing has a lot of humor so there might be a joke that hasn’t aged well or sarcasm that went over the reader’s head
