One of the most baffling aspects, for me, is that this inaction will clearly cost us so much more than investing in mitigation strategies today. The potential fine for not reaching climate targets (basically throwing billions away) could be transformative. Infrastructure, nature regeneration etc.

Provide farmers with the same subsidies, but to move from sheep farming into nature restoration and rewilding projects. Cost to the exchequer is zero but impact on environment and climate targets is significant. The answer is staring them in the face.

I live in Laois and anytime I drive to Limerick or Cork I see barren mountain ranges on all sides, and despair. They could be so much more. Instead we’ve thousands of acres of nothing.

And the worst thing is, in 3 or 4 years they’ll miraculously start increasing the numbers of houses being built just in time for an election run in, and the same people will fall for it all over again. Rinse and repeat.
