A is for... Archaeology🪏

Archaeology (broadly!) is the study of human activity through the things they left behind. By piecing together lots of different elements, archaeologists can get an impression of what life was like in the past.

Here's one of our team up to their shins in mud (thank goodness for those wellies!) photographing a section using a North arrow and a 0.5m measuring rod. These two tools are used to accurately record the orientation and archaeological details of the deposits and features observed in the section.

At our Wollaton dig, we’ve uncovered barbed wire, shreds of clothing, and a possible boot heel plate that may link to the 1945 camp which housed German and Italian prisoners.

We’ve also recovered artefacts dating back to the Medieval period!

Here’s a look at the final discoveries from We Dig Derventio!

We reached Roman material — some coins, hobnails from boots, a hair pin… and one mystery! 🧐

It’s a small spoon-shaped piece, but not quite deep enough for a spoon or ear scoop. What do you think it could be?

After clearing the 20th-century layers at We Dig Derventio, we’ve uncovered features that might link to the old railway or even the bowling green – perhaps drainage?

We also ran a mini-dig at @derbymuseums.bsky.social, where young archaeologists recreated artefacts they uncovered!

What’s been happening at We Dig Derventio this week? 👀

Our team has been hard at work uncovering more of this fascinating settlement – and there’s plenty of action on site!

Over at We Dig Derventio, we’ve uncovered a series of Victorian and 20th-century pits filled with bottles and pottery! 🏺

We've also enjoyed a tour of Derby Museum’s galleries and welcomed around 40 visitors to a busy Ask the Archaeologist session! 👷‍♀️🗣️

Still lots to uncover!

Week 2 of our York training dig got off to a busy start, with our trainees taking down more of the tile dump and finding pieces of glazed pottery, plus a tiny bead!

The week also revealed the start of a possible medieval tile hearth, so we're excited to see what else that exposes next week!
