But you are right that dividends are irrelevant since they remove that value from the stock, so there’s no good rational reason to prefer dividend stocks over non-dividend stocks. In fact, it’s often worse due to the tax implications of dividends vs capital gains.

IIRC, some people argue that paying dividends forces companies to be more fiscally disciplined, since they have to cough up cash every now and then.

For context, ICLR is a conference but conferences are the top venues in computer science.
