También se han encontrado restos de megafauna de la Era de Hielo que han aparecido muy adentro de las cuevas inundadas y pertenecen cronológicamente al Pleistoceno tardío.

La exploración sistemática de las cuevas subacuáticas de Quintana Roo comenzó en Tulum a mediados de 1980. Diferentes equipos de buzos comenzaron a explorar los cenotes de la región y encontraron extensos pasajes que crecían a medida que unían sus registros.
