I gave a seminar and panel discussion on energy flows in nature drawing on the link with Ramon Margolef’s seminal work on these topics half a century ago. His prescient contributions aren’t appreciated enough in the anglophone world I think.

I had a wonderful few days this week, hosted by the government of Catalonia and the University of Barcelona, and receiving the Ramon Margalef Prize for ecological research from the president of Catalonia

Our paper on mapping the canopy traits and functions of global tropical forests was published online in Nature last month but is out in print today, and it made the cover 😊

Congrats again to @jeaggu.bsky.social and the many, many co-authors who contributed to this

It’s the time of one of the most magic microseasons in British woodlands - bluebell carpets paint the forest floor, a sight unique to to the western fringes of Eurasia. Here at the ever-mesmerising Wytham Woods

Despite being poor in many other biodiversity measures, Britain has an unusual number (for W Europe) of ancient trees. It was a joy to be shown around the magnificent and deeply charismatic ancient oaks of @blenheimpalace.bsky.social by Filipe Salbany

I really enjoyed attending the Dutch Ecological Research Network annual meeting this week, and giving a keynote on the role of animal wildlife and #rewilding in #climatechange adaptation. Starting with tales of how seabirds, trees and parrotfish help tropical atolls to keep up with rising seas

Using ChatGPT we analyse 180,000 papers to look at how often local tropical country researchers are included in authorship and co-authorship, over 60 years. Some surprising trends, some good news and some things to work on. I'll post some key insights here as well... @britishecolsoc.bsky.social

Really looking foward to #BES2024 in Liverpool this week. If you're attending, I will be presenting tomorrow at 1030 am on whether "parachute science" is on the decline in tropical ecology. @britishecolsoc.bsky.social

I popped into the British Museum
Silk Roads exhibition, about how interconnected Eurasia has been for millennia. Blown away by this mini 6th century Buddha from Swat Valley, which had travelled to Helgö island in Sweden

We haven’t had much snow in Oxford in recent winters. To have some so early while some trees are still flaming is an unexpected gift, a caress of gold with white

Happy misty Monday to new (and renewed) Bluesky friends.

In Britain the days may be shortening and frequently grey, but when the sun comes out it is so good to pause and hail the fleeting moment when the trees talk in tongues of gold, copper and flame

On a bleak day in world news it was healing and inspiring to spend an evening in conversation with Richard Powers, discussing storytelling, kinship with o fellow species, humility and so much more. Especially in the context of his magnificent new book Playground
