Gareth & Neve meet/flirt many times before VG, so he is stoked when they team up with Varric. It’s not until their fight where Neve refuses to say ‘I love you’ out of fear of the upcoming fight that Gareth finally figures out what he’s feeling for her. My guy’s not great with emotions lol

Gareth saw what leadership did to his mother, and never wanted to follow in her footsteps. He constantly worried about making the wrong choices, and only after the fade prison & reuniting with his family does he start to truly embrace his role. He never considers himself a hero, just a guardian.

Vax never wanted to be a hero or a leader. He hated being trapped in the south, but felt compelled to help those in need despite vehemently rejecting the title of ‘herald’. Inquisitor wasn’t much better for him but it served a purpose. He largely considers himself a failure for not catching Solas.
