Busy day at the water fountain today. White-crowned sparrows, orange-crowned warbler, yellow-rumped warblers (see the bright yellow rump tucked under his wings?), house finches and an Anna’s hummingbird. They are looking for water because it’s been so dry.

Another CA native, Eve Case coffeeberry. Five gallon shrub that will be enjoyed by bees, butterflies and birds. It already has berries! Planting day in about a week 🥰

The newest monarch butterfly and a fat caterpillar in my raised bed in CA in January! Even though it was 36°F this morning. These guys are tough! There is an official monarch overwintering site a mile from my raised bed.

My sixth monarch eclosed this morning, dried his wings and is a beautiful male monarch in my raised bed.

I quit the vegetable gardening and switched to planting for birds, bees, butterflies. I’m so much happier now! My garden is constantly buzzing and they truly need the help now. Mostly CA natives. My recently eclosed monarch!

Met someone from the county habitat agency who was looking for overwintering monarchs at Baylands and we looked up to see one!
