#today when I was out for a walk a two year old toddled over to me and said "good morning." We had a lovely chat and although I am not quite sure what it was all about it was well worth going out for.

This was a 5/5 read for me, as all Niall Williams books have been. The way he uses words is music.

#today. It is library delivery day. They have a list of about 40 books I want to read but I don't know what has been chosen until they arrive. Not many things make me feel like a kid at Christmas anymore but this does.

Family arrived en masse to install my new adjustable bed and remove the old one. My joy was only dulled slightly by the person I was describing it to on the phone who said "oh, a hospital bed".

#today At 5 o'clock this morning I literally thought I would rather be dead than feel this sick. But 2 lovely St John ladies, a good doctor, some strong medication, a plan for ongoing treatment and a few hours sleep and I most definitely am glad to be alive.

#today The recycling bin was emptied during heavy rain and by the time I brought it in there was 6 inches of water in it. I managed to tip it over to drain and now I know just how useless it feels to not be able to stand a bin back up. I hope whoever is my next visitor is younger and fitter than […]

Historical fiction, LGBT, 1900's homesteading on the Canadian prairies.
It took a few chapters to get into this but I am glad I persevered.

#today Grandson called in to tell me every detail of his first day at school in year 13 - every detail of every class, every teacher, every friend, the privileges accorded to seniors. After years of "what did you do at school" "nothing" I was delighted by his enthusiasm.

I found this a bit confusing sorting out the characters but once I did this was compulsive reading for me. But I am a Lisa Jewell fan of long standing so don't take my word for it.

reading #books #bookstodon I enjoyed this American Civil War story, well researched and inspired by true events which are detailed in the authors notes.

A well written historical novel focused on portraying the roles of female SOE operatives during World War II, this book is inspired by the stories of real people.

A mystery that takes place at a pub’s weekly trivia night, revealed through quiz categories, phone messages, and email correspondence.
I am not a fan of this style of writing - it is called epistolary I believe - but once I got started I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

This novel is written in the form of letters from a 78 yr old woman as she looks at past grief and relationships in the face of aging and illness.
I rat it 4 out of 5 stars.

There is nothing honorable about "honor" killings and it is not a comfortable subject to read about, but I wish the author had not tried to soften the impact by wrapping it in a chick lit style romance.

Written in 1975, set in early post-colonial India. Very reminiscent of A Passage to India by E M Forster . It seems writers of the day were fascinated with the idea of British women having romantic liaisons with Indian gentlemen.

#reading #books #bookstodon I don't think this is Adichie's best novel. Her writing is as wonderful as ever but the story rambles endlessly through the love lives of four women with no real plot. I have loved all her other books.

"A powerful, eye-opening insight into navigating the world as a disabled young woman. Women’s lives are shaped by sexism and expectations. Disabled people’s lives are shaped by ableism and a complete lack of expectations. But what happens when you’re subjected to both sets of rules?
