Hanagae Beach on Muuido Island, Incheon, Korea.
Late autumn has already arrived, and the sea shuns people.
Yet the beach and tidal flats surrounding the sea, along with the mountains and autumn foliage, still yearn for human presence.

This morning reminds me of the Finnish novel, The Pelican Man.
A pelican wearing human clothes, people mistaking that pelican for a human.
People who wage war through indifference, greed, ideology, and religion, even while living together.
Nature is always nature. Yet people deny it.

220 years ago today, British Admiral Nelson fought and defeated Napoleon's Franco-Spanish fleet at Trafalgar, where he was killed in action.
He is often compared to Admiral Yi Sun-sin in Korea.

Yesterday I went to Sorae Wetland Park in Incheon.

This autumn, I started these suburban walks for the first time.
This too is a world different from books.

Sorae Wetland Park. The vast wetland opens up your chest.
The faint song of reeds and silver grass, created by the wind, is also soothing.

I came to the Seoul Six Martyred Ministers Park.

It's been a long time since I went on an outing in Seoul.

Knowing history,
the attitude with which we live our lives.
None of this is easy.

Even so, there are things we must know,
things we must protect and endure.

I visited Myeongnyang with students from the Naval Academy Department of Mokpo National Maritime University. On the 16th day of the 9th lunar month in 1597, Admiral Yi Sun-sin fought and defeated 133 Japanese ships with just 13 of his own.
That sea still churns violently, as if remembering him.

A rock bloomed a flower.
Yeongheungdo Island, Incheon. Sipripo Beach.
The forward base for the Incheon Landing Operation.
More than the commemorative stone marking that history,
the small flowers sprouting from the rock crevices seem to ensure
that painful history is not forgotten.

This photo shows a used bookstore in Incheon, South Korea. Many of the used bookstores that once lined that street have now disappeared. The market has shifted to the internet, and smartphones are also to blame.

Hansando’s waters once rang with Admiral Yi’s 1592 victory over Japan. Today it’s peaceful, with a shrine on shore and turtle ships recreating his legacy at Tongyeong.

In 1592, Admiral Yi Sun-sin defeated invading Japan at Hansando. Now the waters lie quiet, no fleet in sight. On Hansando stands a shrine to him, and off Tongyeong float models of his famed turtle ships.

I stopped by the seaside briefly. A few times a year, whenever I have business requiring my assistance, I make time to visit. The sea still hasn't fully awakened. The waves continue to snore quietly.

In the realm of work and matters involving others, planning was mostly my primary task. Yet when it comes to my endeavors, I charge ahead recklessly, strangely numb-minded. Since there are no guidelines for success or failure, I find joy in the mere fact that any outcome is the result of my actions.

The bellflower seeds I planted a few years ago started blooming last year. They are so lovely that I don't harvest them.

Books I haven't read, books I couldn't read, books I should read.

Facts and truths

More than that, those books are science. They are books that are closer to unverified wordplay.

Most of what people do is just wordplay. Facts and.
Science always reveals what is false.

Sometimes...

This is our local library. In September, I will be teaching a course called "Admiral Yi Sun-shin Research" to master's and doctoral students. I am using AI to create lecture materials, but I have been struggling with Python coding for a week. Even if you study history, you need to study coding.

This year has been really fortunate so far. Every year, there are many things that go wrong due to the weather and other circumstances, but so far, that hasn't been the case. Even if you plant the same things, the results are different every year.

Today, there is no scorching sun or heat yet. Instead, it is raining. How long has it been since it last rained? I wait under the tarp for the rain to stop. I look at the flowers in front of the tarp, waiting to reap the rewards of the sweat I have shed since spring.
