Japan has begun constructing the first four of a planned fleet of 12 next-generation offshore patrol vessels for the Maritime Self-Defense Force as Tokyo looks to step up surveillance and monitoring of its waters.

Such moves by US allies today are made without reciprocal US promise/affirmation of security guarantee. In the case of Taiwan, a substantially higher percentage of GDP spent on defense would not make much difference, as we witness what just happened to Ukraine. www.scmp.com/news/china/p...
