Oh is this an invitation? My book came out a few months before the pandemic, so I didn’t get the fun of doing in-person book talks. It’s on ghost opera in the PRC, which was hugely important culturally & politically in the 50s & 60s. It’s slender and beautifully written. I’m very proud of it.

Consider getting Paul Kroll's dictionary of classical and medieval Chinese if you don't already have it. I find it very helpful, nearly every day.

It is a great idea. Don't hesitate to let me know if you decide to pursue this. Maybe not so overwhelming as you are imagining if you pull together a group and a publisher is found.

As crazy as the guy seems, it's still worth asking whether the voters should be given credit for making the decision they did.

Exactly, content creators work at this for years with rare skills, only to sign it over to profit-seeking academic publishers, to a degree for the service, but also to meet institutional requirements or for prestige. Worse, some publishers then place other's hard work behind steep paywalls. Silly.

Lastly, my uneducated guess is that had these academics cooperated to self-publish, and made their work publicly accessible by posting it online, many, many more people would read it, who knows, maybe 10x the number? 40 is way too much for much of the world. Maybe they'll post it anyway.

Also, sadly, that money does not go to the content creators, just Springer, who owns it. Were there supportive societies or universities, the editing and publication process is easily achieved these days. If money is a concern, the creators earn some, if education, the pdf can be posted publicly.

The contributors could have just self-published it through any of several venues, charged about 15 bucks, and then posted the pdf online for anyone who would like to read it. There are all kinds of ways to get around the academic publishing scam these days.

A paper in the Journal of World Philosophies on Zhan Ruoshui. While Wang Yangming is well known outside East Asia, few other important Ming dynasty Ruists are. That may have more to do with contingent historical factors than the intrinsic value of their Ruism. scholarworks.iu.edu/iupjournals/...

Nice! I haven't been very impressed by this stuff so far but maybe that's because I'm too lazy to figure out just how brilliant and useful it is as well as how it can think for and replace me, allowing me to retire to the void.

I love this thread. I have also collaborated w/ my husband (many people warned this would kill my career. I am glad to say it did not). You speak truthfully!
