This has actually been on the agenda for decades but hasn’t happened basically because the Bundesverfassungsgericht would revolt

It’s always lost on the “those dumb Irish, relying on a single crop” crowd that the rest of European peasantry ate little more than bread, bread, bread and more bread at that time

Give up man. You can’t even pronounce her name, that should’ve been the first clue that she wasn’t USian

Am always perplexed at USians’ solution to these things being term limits and not *retirement ages* which seem far more logical and apt to address the problem

The Brits voting to rejoin the EU followed by a Reform/Tory coalition would be quite the turn of events

Those takes were always extremely dumb if you gave them 10 seconds thought

*Smug American lib voice* “Crazy that [insert Euro far right party] got 27% in the latest elections. Can’t believe those Euros are going fascist again!”

Okay buddy, the far right party gets >45% in every single US election

I remember when Labour floated the idea of a rotating Taoiseach pre-2011 election and the common FG refrain was “the markets hate uncertainty”. Just spouting any auld rubbish really

I mean they cared for about 4 weeks after the Afghanistan withdrawal when they formed a general view that “this guy is old and incompetent”. Then they forgot about the withdrawal but kept the view of Biden

Is that meant to be Maura Higgins on the left?!
January 3, 2025 at 5:02 PM
One of labour’s biggest own goals after 2011 was allowing FG to do all the cuts they highlighted in the “every little hurts” ad. Those and not cutting public sector pay were their “loud and proud” red lines and they let FG cross every single one of them

Those are both true and fair points I of course was talking about the few who actually get convicted. Haven’t seen that discourse but sounds silly 🤷

Can you provide a recent example of a rapist not getting prison time in Ireland? Rape is always tried in the high court, so you generally get more competent judges who follow sentencing principles and recognise it as the 2nd most serious offence on our statute books, not Martin Nolans

On that note, how different things could’ve been had Labour not coalesced with FG in 2011. They had just become the second largest party and would’ve been a far more acceptable opposition to a lot of people than either FF or SF. Possible they’d have ended up larger than FG by 2016 or 2021

Think the main difference between soc dems and the other two is it’ll be very hard to get them into gov with FG/FF. A lot of them are ex Labour people who were so traumatised by the post 2011 experience that they’re a lot more FFG averse than the other two, even if aligned on policy/ideology
