the degree to which they lock down stuff that interacts with the community feels counterproductive, yeah. I get giving incentives like "if you want this then buy a sub" but you gotta let people get their beaks wet if you want them to drink. I'll prob get a sub after the FT MSQ but after a break.

I started the FF14 free trial recently and I'm up to Stormblood content by now and I can count the number of social interactions I've had in one hand. Granted part of it is that I usually play on call on discord with friends, but the in-game community-building feels kinda dire.

The article sadly doesn't give any maths to support the statement that fixing the AI's errors is *more* costly than its cost saving effects. I heartily believe it but I'm looking forward to seeing the numbers that would prove it.

I'm not sure this is necessarily revelatory of crowd-fundedness. I'm not really thinking of any particular example but I feel like "the first area of the game is the game at large in miniature" is a common thing in videogames. It is design that serves to teach the player the game's conventions.

"Heroes" are also just people and prone to mistakes and failures like anyone else. Social and political movements have failed because they attached themselves to the charisma of a single leader and lost the ability to maintain ideological coherence. If your friends can't parse this then idk.

He's missing from a lot of the show and by the end his motivations are (for what I assume were production reasons) unclear and confused. And I think he doesn't succeed in any of his military action on-screen? So he's sustained entirely on aura which hits more if you're fresh.

Yeah, most of the anger over Kirk's death was performative. Probably the most deep impact of the cultural victory reactionaries are currently enjoying is that they've made empathy feel naïve and cruelty feel intelligent. No-one's really gonna care for any shooting victim these days.

That's true, but their camaraderie existed in the context of a military struggle. Could Amuro get along with any of the White Base crew in a civilian capacity? Fraw Bow is the only one we see and she is at least understanding. Good food for thought.

I do think 0079 ends in a melancholy tone. Amuro has his found family, but episode 13 still echoes. Amuro has a home, but only as a soldier. He cannot escape war, and Zeta and CCA confirm this. The fact that he gets goaded back into soldiery in Zeta is, imo, tragic.

I honestly just assumed Newtypes were referencing Star Wars already. Amuro shooting down Lalah's funnels is basically the same as the scene where Luke trains with deflecting the training drone's blasts.
