And even if you separate the author - oh boy did people REALLY not want to talk about money, gringotts, and goblins. Literally too on the nose for them.

Sorry, friends, just kick HP to the curb, if you already know JKR sucks. It hurts, but principles don't mean anything if you don't listen to them.

A smarter response was: no modern consumption is morally pure, so it's preferable to enjoy it despite disavowing the author. But this was conflated with 'death of the author', in which one interprets a work on their own terms while disavowing the author's intent.

It's still playing in her sandbox.

Engaging with the franchise that is still owned and influenced by JKR gives it social and cultural weight, something that we package and sell and consume at industrial scale. How can we ever engage w/ it without believing we are validating and empowering her, even if indirectly/in a diffuse manner?

People felt more entitled to their nostalgia than their principles and I still haven't come to terms with how far people will mask desires and habit with principles & backwards justifications.

Like, I once liked HP too. I like good games. Pirating might have been somebody's solution, but even so...

When the Legacy game came out and I insisted on not playing nor consuming any related media people made a lot of excuses why it was okay.

I felt like the odd one out for saying assigning her fandom zero attention was the principled stance, no matter how divested she was personally from the game.

Oh, I see. I wasn't trying to gatekeep what counts as open.

I was more criticizing the way closed-down and extractive projects like to falsely claim the mantle of the open internet (presumably to profit) while being absolutely uncommitted to the very elements that made it flourish.

I don’t have enough context on what you mean.

If you want to make the parallel to the OPEN World Wide Web, make a modern parallel to the Apache web server, not GeoCities.

One made the open web, the other was one step on the long path to enshittification.

every single patch and DLC getting instantly data-mined and debated is sooooo tedious. arguing over some microsoft excel file instead of the beautiful game right in front of us.
it kills the mystique when you know someone's gonna figure everything out from the demo/beta onward.

if video games are gonna be art, then you gotta let sketchbooks be sketchbooks, so to speak. the work is the work, and the cuttings are sometimes very interesting but not the work. the data-mining thing feels like pretension to authority. I see why an air of objectivity appeals, but it's not real

They’re going for scale, but Quest is obviously still harsh competition and I don’t expect it to displace Meta from their slice.

I think it’s more to offer something to the smaller but more expensive niche of Index substitutes with eye tracking, or a Vive replacement.

I’m getting one because it has a flip up thing plus ET, and was lucky enough to not have any showstoppers w/ my 1.

Needing corrective prisms also means that unless I get in early, the software stack accounting for me may be a gamble.

Looks like an OSS SourceTree, which I haven’t had to migrate away from ever, and which is also free.
