Yeah, I'm just worried we don't have the imagination to see how grim it will actually get. Like, just reading how this paragraph doesn't evoke species-level existential dread in everyone, baffles me.

The load-bearing scare quotes around "meaningful" are... something.

Wait what? After years and years of giving ML people shit for how much “tensors” are just plain… *not that*, you’re telling me that “embeddings” actually *are*?!?

Stopped clock, these CS people and their naming issues, I say.

It may have been an hour slower than the last time I ran this race, but this time I did it *stupider*: I ran further yesterday than I’d run in the months of September and October *combined*.

How’s *that* for idiotically undertrained?!? Just goes to show you that sheer orneriness can compensate?!?

Well gee, Max, this seems like a group I want to hear their thoughts on AI.

Faith leaders, Steve Bannon, and Prince Harry. I’m sold!

No cheating, post your lock screen.

My kiddo is heading off to university a continent away from this madness, in a little over a month, but I still like this shot from a million years ago, when my little munchkin would (much) more easily cuddle up on my lap:

Vibe coding is for amateurs. You do it *in advance*?

... and when Claude makes up APIs, you stifle their creativity and make them use boring "already created functions"?

Behold the last ruby program you didn't know you needed to write:

I've gotta say, I hadn't been on deadbirdsite in a while, but it's absolutely hilarious to see how many blue-checkmark folks ask Grok to back-up their preconceived notions, only to get sorely disappointed.

Mental note: I should not be trusted with booking my own lodging in unfamiliar cities, or else we end up in “quaint” and “nautical themed” lodging.

The fact that it got this one to within the accuracy that *I* remembered, wow (i.e. I don't remember which truck stop this was next to, but it picked out the stretch of 50 miles of the exact highway).

well, it was a good run.

It's been so fun over the past year or so, coding with my buddy Claude, but now he just goes off and does it on his own, running tests, adding new ones, looking at error logs, and I sit here kinda peering over his shoulder while he works, thinking "hmm, yeah, nice job..."

Arg! I'm talking to my good friend Claude Sonnet right now, don't you put his little brother Haiku on the phone, jfc we were having a very serious technical discussion!

(and I'm stuck on a plane with nobody else to have this with!)

Mine's pretty obscure, you probably haven't heard of him.

(as it turns out, I was being born almost literally across the street from his parents "backyard" [it's a fancy hotel now, but it was a hospital in the 70's], where I imagine he might have had some part of his bday party? )

I think my intuition is based on looking at ColBERT (v1 or v2) without PLAID, because your table 5.2 even shows it: "Vanilla" ColBERT v2, on MSMARCO v1 (8.8M passages) takes between 900-4500ms latency on an 8CPU config. With PLAID, between 30-100ms!

Damn, I tried it with multiplication, in a case where the first move is losing, and it figured it out too:
