Neither the Voters nor the Leadership of the BSW see themselves as leftist. In an Analysis by DVPW they see themselves to the right of the centrist SPD. Looking at policy proposals they seem to be socially conservative and economically ambiguous.

Not really. Even for CDU standards Merz is a hardliner. He is very anti-feminist and anti-progressive and was the first Politician to use AfD (the modern Nazi Party) votes to try to win a vote on legislation. Disregarding that, he is still the most right wing Chancellor Germany has seen in Decades.
