Weather nerdery for Edmonton Alberta, with side discussions of nearby rural stations, and other big Canadian cities.
We're back today with Edmonton's Winters - the Good, the Bad, and the Data (Part 2).
Let's talk snow!
(Our only snowfall measurement is at the airport, which is quite a bit colder than the city. But it's what we've got, so we'll use it)

November 10th's High of 12.8°C was Edmonton's 8th warmest on record. 2005 holds the record at 17°C.
The Low of 2.9°C was the 2nd warmest on record, behind 3.3°C from 1895. #yegwx #yeg

This morning's Low of around 2.9°C will be very close to November 10th's warmest Low on record, at 3.3°C from way back in 1895.
Today is supposed to be pretty warm, but to get to the record High we would need to get way up to 17°C, from 2005.

So November 7th was the airport's first official snow of the winter, with 6cm. #yegwx #yeg
The only recent years which waited longer were 2021 on the 14th, and 2011 on the 12th.

The airport didn't measure any snowfall yesterday, so it looks like November 7th will probably be the official first snow of the winter.
That's pretty late. Recently 2021 got to the 14th, and 2011 to the 11th. But 2016 got snow on August 27th.

November 5th is pretty late. In 2024 it was November 3rd, and the record looks to be November 10th from 1983.

On Halloween Edmonton's average High is 5°C, and the average Low is -3.2°C.
But Halloween 1984 scared and scarred a generation of kids with a High of -17.7°C, and a Low of -23.7°C.
1991 & 2003 were also unusually cold, but nothing like that.

No official snow at the Edmonton airport yesterday, but Calgary did record 1cm. #yeg #yegwx #yyc #yycweather
This is Calgary's earliest snow since 2021.
The last time that they got a really early September snow was 2019, and 2018 for us.

Edmonton's first fall frost of 2025 was October 4th.
The average is September 29th, so this was just a bit late.
Recently we had the two latest fall frosts on record, with October 22nd in 2023 and 23nd in 2022.
(2024 was fairly late on the 12th).

September 17th is our 11th 25°C High of September (it's not on the chart yet). That ties 2009 as September's 2nd most on record, behind 12 in 1938 & 1909.
It's the 55th 25°C High of 2025, tying 2023 & 2018 for 5th most on record (1898 has the record of 64).

At 2pm we're up to 6 30°C days in-a-row, which continues to extend the new record for this time of year (the old record was 3).
And it's one away from the all-time record of 7 from 2024 & 2021.
#yegwx #yeg
...we've had 5 30°C Highs in-a-row. That's a new record for this time of year, ahead of 3 in 2024, 2022 & 1967.
It's also only 2 short of the all-time record of 7, from both July 2024 & June/July 2021.

Today is the 30th new record High set during the last 5 summers, giving 20% of the summer days new records.
...we've had 4 new records Highs this summer (3 this week, and 1 back in May).
2021 & 2022 had 5, 2023 had 6, and 2024 had 9.
For May-September, in the past 5 summers we've set 29 record Highs. That's new records for 20% of the days.

And so, a High of at least 32.5°C at 3PM gives us:
- new record for August 29
- 4 new records in a row
- 4th top-10 for this time of year
- 4 32°C Highs in-a-row, which ties the all-time record
#yegwx #yeg
