That's a good point! A quick an dirty way to tell if it's a front end exhaust leak (like near the manifold) is that your car will start to smell like gasoline all the time. If the the exhaust leak is after the catalytic converter then you shouldn't be able to smell it.

Mufflers rely a lot on the exact pressures pulsing back and forth down the exhaust pipe to bring the noise down. Even a little tiny hole screws up that equilibrium. These shouldn't be that bad to patch up.

Yeah I don't believe there were any cables engineered for this standard as it was so short lived, and the drives were only ever supposed to be flush-mount anyways.

Its an old IBM standard for internal connectors on hot-swappable disc drive bays (as appears to be pictured here). While I do believe the connector is scsi I don't believe it used the same protocols.
