Yeast biologist interested in metabolism and genomics. Cultivated meat skeptic. If you misuse the word "fermentation", I *WILL* come after you. Allergic to buzzwords in general. Any opinions expressed here are my own, nothing to do with my employer.
The biochemical and biogeochemical arguments are intricate but the biochemical case against cultivated meat is basically: no optimal way of feeding the cells glucose and amino acids. Biogeochemical argument has to do with how nitrogen gets into the amino acids (see pic). Be happy to elaborate.

The publicity bit or the biochemistry/biogeochemistry bit? Or both?

My take: A cultivated meat ban is great publicity for cultivated meat because it implies that it could actually work as a concept (which it can't in reality for reasons of biochemistry and biogeochemistry.)

As a university lecturer, this article has upended my day somewhat since I often tell my students to visualize certain scenarios. If aphantasia is prevalent among STEM researchers (and therefore STEM teachers), could this explain some of the pedagogical shortcomings I observe with some colleagues?

Only to its friends. To anyone else, it's "Robert-Catherine".

I've started telling my students (first-year university undergrads) that any task they outsource to generative AI is a missed opportunity for learning – even if the task seems mundane. And I kind of feel the same way about outsourcing my own teaching tasks – how will I improve my teaching skills?

I'm recommending "Strange Darling" from last year to anyone who will or won't listen.
