(I took this to mean many things, but partly that the characters were othering Heathcliff and being racist, perhaps to someone who could have been Romany? Especially the locals of the moors who regard anyone not from there as a ‘foreigner’).

The most definite thing about his parents in the book is that no one has ever met them, and no one knows where he is from. At various places the text has him as ‘dark-skinned’ or ‘g*psy’.

But having just read the book, there ARE comments about Heathcliff's appearance throughout. At one point he's described as a ‘lascar’ (which my book edition explains as a ‘native of the East Indies’, e.g. Malaysia, Indonesia), he is also described as ‘an American or Spanish castaway’.

I think Jacob Elordi is a brilliant actor and going to be a phenomenal Heathcliff. I also love that the actors playing Edgar Linton and Nelly Dean in the film are people of colour. Art does not have to be sacred, and remain pristine, untouched and unchanged.

Best film I've watched in ages. Saw it on Netflix and then at a theatre here in London. Beautiful. Soul-destroying. Exquisite. Was in tears multiple times. Hadn't seen anything with Jacob Elordi before (am correcting that!). What a phenomenal actor. Hope you, he et al get ALL the awards. Magical.
