Today we crossed a moor above Nelson, were followed by a suspicious farmer, then stopped for cake at Ricci’s in Bargoed. 12 miles: bog and ancient woodland, some tough terrain. The cake was excellent and we were welcomed as if we were knights resting in a quest for the holy grail. #wales

I have a large collection of poetry, have only dipped into them. I’ve decided to start reading them again - and arranging those I’ve read on my stairs, a league table. Mick Imlah is currently in danger of relegation - I don’t understand him. Derek Mahon currently top, Louise Glück on his heels.

Every now and then a group of us gets out into the Welsh hills, today we were seven, we walked 10 miles from Porth, up on to high snowy heaths, found a pub with a fire and there in the glow of the flames, talking mostly nonsense, I felt as if I’d discovered the holy grail, the meaning of life.
