الفضول الذي قد يساعدنا على فهم سبب معاناتنا أو عدم رضانا يضيع في ضجيج الحياة اليومية. نحن بحاجة إلى خفض مستوى ذلك الضجيج ولإنماء ذلك الفضول. فليس كل شيء كما يبدو في الظاهر. يكمن شيئٌ أعمق وراء ما نعيه، وأحياناً يوقعنا هذا اللامَوعي في مشاكلنا في الوقت الذي نظن أننا نتفاداها.

ينطبق وصفي هذا على العلاقة العلاجية أيضاً. إن لم توجد المساحة التي تسمح للمتعالج أن يعبر عن غضبه، كرهه، اشمئزازه، أو خوفه من المعالج، فكيف له أن يعبر عن أي مشاعر أخرى تجاهه؟ وهل يمكن للثقة وأمانة التعبير والأصالة أن تنمو في العلاقة؟
إن لم توجد إمكانية التعبير المناسب عن الغضب، فعلينا أن نشك في وجود علاقة عميقة قادرة على الاستمرار…
قد لا توجد علاقة ذات عمق واستمرارية بلا صراعات سوى في الروايات الرومانسية…
