Happy to see the big NYT piece about South Asian voters for Zohran

Hopefully this will make other editors out there more receptive of the same reporting I’ve been doing for months

Shoutout to @surbhigupta.bsky.social @dannypostel.bsky.social for recognizing this story before ANY OTHER pub.

South Asian communities in
NYC are desperately under reported. That leads to false ideas around their caste, class, regional & religious identities taking hold in mainstream narratives.

As I work on a piece on the NYC Mayoral race, I’ve decided to share my reporting from the areas I’m visiting.

The NYC focused media, like journalism across the US seems over burdened & under funded. Yet, there are stories like the South Asian community's response to Zohran Mamdani's campaign that are worth pursuing.

My latest piece, part of a longer series on NYC Mayoral race. substack.com/@yashicadutt...

The @ZohranKMamdani rally last evening felt unmistakably South Asian.

From Ali Sethi’s electric performance to @kalpenn as the emcee and vintage Hindi songs blasting from the speakers pre performance.

This felt like an arrival moment.

I have two more events before the closing of this month — at @rutgerscsrr.bsky.social on April 23 with the exceptional @saharazizlaw and a panel with Roohi Choudhry & fave @monaeltahawy.bsky.social curated and moderated by pyaari_azaadi in Brooklyn. 📆🎙️🎤💙
Both are free/open to public. Come say hi!🌸

Last week, I was thrilled to be invited by the Asian American Alliance at
@oberlincollege.bsky.social who worked extremely hard to make sure that our event could take place during Dalit History Month, marking it a historic first 🩵 ✊🏽

At Williams, I was in conversation with Prof Joel Lee, who has prodigious research on caste and whose terrific book with K Satyanarayana ‘Concealing Caste’ is a treasure trove of stories of hiding one’s caste. 🔥⚡️I was deeply honored to be featured in his work & finally be in conversation with him 🪷🪻

It’s still Dalit History Month! 🦋🐬🌀🩵And the events calendar is up in full swing 🌷🌼🌿🌹💕🩵
I’ve been traveling all over the North East.

After my events at Colby College and Colgate University in late March, I was invited to visit
Williams College in Massachusetts and Oberlin College in Ohio ⚡️🌨️🏔️🚞✈️

Clearly Twitter is completely broken with the recent Bluesky exodus.

They're out there bullying an academic who shared the completion of her PhD simply because she dared to be higher educated while being a woman. American men are outraged for her spending 'tax payer' money on it. She is British.

Here’s hoping that Film Forum in New York where I watched the film made sure that its format was accurate 🤞🏽

It’s an ode to Mumbai, to migrants, to longing, to resistance, to connection, to love, and to defiance.

I’ve waited a long time for this. Ever since Coming Out as Dalit was published in India, I hoped to release it worldwide, especially in the US, where I’ve lived for some time now. But despite its many successes & rewards at home, publishers in the US did not think it worthy to publish Dalit stories.
