Climate scientist, passionate about the Arctic and Earth’s history. Explorer/mom. Was William Deering Prof at Northwestern, on to adventures in Boston and writing.
Thrilled to be in beautiful Nuuk for Greenland Science Week. What a special place. And what an opportunity to learn from Greenland's scientists & community members. Qujanaq/tak to our hosts: Arctic Hub, Asiaq, Ilisimatusarfik, Grønlands Naturinstitut. (Colleagues who are here, let's connect!)

New paper! PhD student Mia Tuccillo has uncovered another big impact of past warming in Greenland: lakes lost oxygen for thousands of years and cyanobacteria took over 🦠 🧪 🦠. It's kinda yikes...

This title from @peterbrannen.bsky.social! 🤩 If only I were better with words, this could have been the name of ALL my climate and Earth history courses for the past 15 years... because yep, everything circles back to CO2. Even when we really wish it didn't.

Looking forward to reading.

MA-based or -trained climate & earth scientists: How has the ransacking of NOAA, NSF, or USGS affected you? I'll be in DC in 1.5 weeks, meeting with our MA senators & staff to advocate for climate & earth sciences. I can share your story, anonymously if you wish. 👩‍🔬 🧪 🌧️

Earlier this week, I published an op ed that means a lot to me -- because it was for the newspaper I read in rural Maine as a kid. The slashing-and-burning of our federal government is going to hurt rural Americans very much.

(There's a piece of good news from Maine at the end of this thread!)

Hurray for Phd student Aidan Burdick, who presented 2 posters at #AGU24. One analyzed marl isotopes in an Illinois lake to look for (maybe) past drought. Another shared deglaciation ages from New Hampshire - work led by collaborators at Dartmouth.

Aidan is becoming a v well-rounded Quaternarist!

Weds afternoon at #AGU24: come talk Holocene lake-level change, lake anoxia, and super-cool pigments from algae and cyanobacteria with Mia!

Tues a.m. I’ll explain why you might fall in love with moss and all things invertebrate in your lake mud. (In case you haven’t already.)

Our group has lots on tap for #AGU24! Past big shifts in temperature, lake level, anoxia. Close looks at several water isotope methods. News from Greenland, New England, & the Midwest. A rundown:

Eventually I’ll post about climate, earth science, the Arctic, fun but professory stuff. But for my 1st Bluesky post I shall celebrate that Eddie Vedder still speaks directly to my soul

2) Nirvana - Nevermind
3) Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream
