Spent the last few months with a lot of thoughts; mostly ones best kept to myself. Survived fall quarter. Gastrocnemius tear mostly healed. Thanksgiving plague has continued to linger. Did myself another MCL tear, trying to avoid inflicting a worse injury on an out-of-position intern. So it goes.

A thread on obscenity. I'll get back to these cars. But first: tonight I took my 12yrold to see Nuremberg. He's a pretty serious movie watcher. Thought Zone of Interest was genius. I knew he could handle this. But this isn't a movie review. It's about IRL... 1/

Fuck you people. Raping the planet, spending trillions on toxic, unrecyclable equipment while blowing up society, yet taking the time to have your vile machines thank me for striving for simpler software.

Just fuck you. Fuck you all.

I can't remember the last time I was this angry.

Lying awake with my brother giving it his all in the midnight snore-us. Christmas often gets me feeling extra pointless, but reviewing the past year in friends’ text messages is making a strong antidote for that.

I keep hearing the Tom Hulce Amadeus giggle in my head in response to whatever obscene/absurd thing I happen to have just observed

I can't tell if it's helping anything,
although it makes them seem less dreary
but it might be making me crazy

Nearly time again to blow the dust off the only Christmas song I'll ever need: Christmas Wrapping. (The Waitresses, 1982)

Wilson Phillips have just arrived in a time machine from 1990 and would like to know, "...how you like us now?"

First day of school and the iPod has just Foreignered me. It could just as well be 1987, except I’m not waiting for the school bus in the dark and rain.

At some point I entered the phase of my life where there's still food I don't care for but avoiding it or picking it out seems like a bigger waste of life than just eating it and not enjoying it. Like baby corn, or celery, or mayonnaise, or brazil nuts.

Squash, though... squash can **** right off.

"Far too many programmers are red pencillers. Some are literal red pencillers who do things by hand that should be done by machine. Others are figurative red pencillers whose use of the machine is so clumsy and awkward that it might as well be manual."

“The truth is, I broke the Tense Operator by living in between tenses. I broke it through my cheating, wishy-washy way of moving through time. It used to be that you could cheat the machine by leaving it between gears, living in a kind of half-assed way, present and at the same time not quite

I skated a lot in my 30s. At one point I thought I'd try aggressive inline, grinding rails and whatnot. Needs totally different skates. Bought a pair. Immediately discovered they are atrocious for doing any kind of normal skating in.

The other day I lost a favorite classic mechanical pencil to my 25 year old backpack finally starting to shred at the seams. The prospect of having to replace it adds to overall sense of bummed-out. Today the pencil turned up in the trunk of the car. Microscopic elation is still elation.

After a couple months with the Lamy Studio fountain pen, it's not for me. It's built well enough and makes a mark on the page, but neither the balance nor the grip are right. I prefer my old Waterman Expert II, and it's not even close. So I bought a second one off eBay.

It's also blue.

caveat: I haven't set foot in a mall in almost two decades.

Internet memes making fun of Hot Topic of the '90s (dark) vs. today (bright). If true, though, it makes perfect sense to me. Cheerfulness and optimism is about as countercultural as you can get right now.
