Irony is powerful as it creates a contrast between expectation and reality, and can lead to deeper meaning, understanding, and action. It exposes hypocrisy and hidden truths. Perhaps during this moment in time, we can unite in our patriotism, our freedom, and our love for our country.

freedom? Is it patriotic to foster hate that is based on the fear of something or someone different? The answer is in the truth. Can Black people not make country music or did Beyonce just win the Grammy award for Best Country Album? Is it irony or the truth? Or both. Hate is never the truth.

The word patriot is NOT on the list. A patriot is “a person who vigorously supports their country and is prepared to defend it against enemies or detractors”. Who is more patriotic than one who loves their country (also not on the list) because their ancestors fought and died for its (and their)

The ability to see the impacts of the current administration as such is more natural for members of populations who historically have been through far worse, people who now experience on a daily basis the subtleties of a society that is inherently racist in ways

Ironically, Black Americans, a clear target of the anti-DEI initiative, may be relatively less ruffled by the flurry of executive orders coming out of the White House. To reiterate the message from last month’s committee newsletter, we are amidst a “moment in time”.

A chunk of the American population is shocked, anxious, feeling helpless, and downright hopeless in response to the new administration. But this terror is magnified by privileged naivety.

A week later, Kendrick Lamar headlined the Super Bowl halftime show with guest performers SZA, “Uncle” Samuel L. Jackson, and Serena Williams. The half-time show was a brilliant performance, a cultural statement infested with Easter eggs, with Uncle Sam interrupting the performance

Doechii won Best Rap Album for “Alligator Bites Never Heal”, SZA won the grammy for Best R&B song for “Saturn”, and Samara Joy won her second Jazz Vocal Album award for “A Joyful Holiday”.

Beyonce made history as the first black woman to win Best Country Album, and also *finally* won Album of the Year, for “Cowboy Carter”, while Kendrick Lamar won both record and song of the year for “Not Like Us”.

How does freedom manifest? February is Black history month and freedom is manifesting in art. The 2025 Grammy Award ceremony was an outstanding celebration of black excellence in music.

Fighting is exhausting and bureaucracy is wasteful, but freedom is freedom. Freedom is NOT a forbidden word.
March 8, 2025 at 10:48 PM
The country is being pummeled with a rapid-fire of executive orders that negate, cancel, and demolish the results of over 200 years of fighting. Fighting for equal rights, fighting for fair pay and benefits, fighting for the ability to love, express, and worship freely.

Other words or phrases on the 109-member list include “equality”, “black and latinx”, “political”, and “female”.

Indeed, all three words are on President Trump’s list of forbidden words or phrases sent in a memo to program officers at the National Science Foundation (The Washington Post, Feb. 4, 2025). The use of an item on this list will flag an application, grant, or article for “review”.

At the last committee meeting, the first item on the agenda was brainstorming a new committee name that doesn’t include the words “diversity”, “equity”, or “inclusion”.

Powerful Irony

Irony is one of those words that is difficult to define without using an example. The converse of a coincidence? The basis of Murphy’s law. An event or situation that is notably contrarian to itself.
