I've illustrated the two ways I usually use shade
The layer configuration looks like this.
①Base (bottom)
②Shade (clipping against ①)
✅A: Make use of the brightness of the foundation and shade it
✅B: Thick coating using grayscale
The base layer is blue for easy understanding.

be conscious of the cylindrical solid when shading tree trunks
Highlight along the center of the cylinder and darken both sides.
↑The addition of reflected light results in a more three-dimensional finish.
