He isn’t the creator. He didn’t work on the show.

Crystal Palace was entirely created by Tony Litt and Mark Buckingham who created Dead Boy Detectives.

NG is not the creator.

He didn’t work on the show. It’s not his and the characters don’t belong to him.

He had nothing to do with the show. The Cat King is an original created by Steve Yockey.

If you didn’t watch the show (definitely assuming you haven’t) he only ever wrote two characters and the only scenes he ever touched were the Sandman ones.

He never met the cast, he doesn’t own the rights (Steve does) and he didn’t work on the actual comics by Toby Litt and Mark Buckingham!

@jamesgunn.bsky.social I really hope to see you bring back Dead Boy Detectives! It’s one of the most critically acclaimed series under DC to date!

Let’s see it move from Netflix!

He didn’t work on the show.

Steve Yockey owns the rights to all characters.

He didn’t work on the show. The writers and showrunners have confirmed it had nothing to do with him. Netflix themselves confirmed it had nothing to do with him to the NYT.

Character and show belongs to Steve Yockey.

There is only one answer and that’s Dead Boy Detectives;

The highest rated DC live action show amongst audiences of all time, the fastest growing fandom of the year, award winning ect

@jamesgunn.bsky.social even gave it his stamp of approval

and as I suspected you didn’t even read the entire thread then lol It really is okay to be wrong, genuinely the open research is right there.

Copyright aka Intellectual Property holder is Warner Brothers who owns DC Comics and commissioned the series. Google is free!

The current 2022-2023 run is done by Pornsak Pichetshote and Jeff Stokely building off the world Toby and Mark established the boys in, so if you’re trying to avoid NG those are also entirely safe to read.

This is even more confirmed when you look at the copyright holdings for Dead Boy Detectives as a show, owned entirely by WB where Steve is employed and has an ongoing deal that was signed in 2022:

Furthermore while working on The Flight Attendant, Steve is the one who approached WB/DC and purchased the rights to DBD:

Neil Gaiman has said countless times that the show is NOT his.

The show belongs to Steve, to the people that wrote and created it and brought it to life. He had nothing to do with the choices made or decisions on the show at all.

In January 2024, Toby even talked about how excited he was to see Crystal and see things HE created on the screen in the show.

Toby and Mark did countless interviews about DBD during the 2013-2014 comic run. These are the comics that expanded the characters away from Sandman, introduced Crystal and created the pieces of the story we love from the show.

It wasn’t until 2013-2014 that Vertigo ordered a full comic series written by Toby Litt and Mark Buckingham. They introduced and created Crystal Palace.

THIS is the run that Dead Boy Detectives show is based on.

NG never wrote or worked on these comics.

Backstory: Charles and Edwin debuted in Sandman #25 in 1991. They didn’t get the name “Dead Boy Detectives” until The Children's Crusade in 1993-1994.

In 2001 and 2005 they are written exclusively by Ed Brubaker and Jill Thompson, NG didn’t work on these at all.

A thread explaining that Neil Gaiman is NOT heavily involved with Dead Boy Detectives; both with the comics and show:
