What begins as a 'West Side Story' romance w/o the musical part, turns into self-depercation overload that nearly each character goes through their own emotional arc that our main couple takes a backseat until the 3rd act. Witch kinda works, but also doesn't.

Yase's directorial mastery is on full display that showcases his unique template structure and cinematography that is both visually striking & captivating, combined with the world mystery makes it a standout for nearly most shonen anime before it.

Loud, bombastic, ultra-violent, gorgeous, & tender. The latest installment has everything you can ask for, for both fans & uninitiated alike. The soft, heartwarming 1st half & the chaotic sledgehammer of the 2nd go hand in hand in the best anime film of the year.

A solid continuation of this unique sports anime by developing new club members and rivalries, but sacrifices the romantic triangle tension of it's main 3 leads by rushing to the karuta matches only to drag them out a bit too long with repetitive game elements.

At it's highest, the comedy reaches 'Saiki K.' levels of kinetic, random hilarity. The melodrama does bogg down the pacing though & repeated gags in the back cour of the season blend together too often to really stand out. All held together by our likable dorks.

To say 'Rising' is the worst season of 'Ippo' is as valid as saying the Bronze Olympic medal is the 3rd worst medal. If it's the last we get of 'Ippo' in anime form I can still say it's the best sports anime ever adapted. ...But would love more, MadHouse. 👀
