A book review I forgot to post here before :'D

Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke adventurous emotional mysterious tense slow-paced Plot- or character-driven? Plot Strong character development? It's complicated Loveable characters? Yes Diverse cast of characters? Yes Flaws of characters a main focus? Yes 4.5 ⭐ The story is slow and very steady yet never is it ever a chore to get through, a rather incredible feat considering the 1000+ page count. Further more Susanna Clarke's character work is some of the most splendid I've ever read. Towards the end I was able to identity a character by their narrative voice without having to hear their name in the scene. I also found this to be a book in which romance is handled beautifully, Mr. and Mrs Strange's love was quite fleshed out and realistic. A lot more than a lot of modern fiction.

If you couldn't tell by the 2nd image...I loved it. I don't often give books 5 stars but this was one of them. It exceeded all my expectations.

The Raven Scholar by Antonia Hodgson The Raven Scholar by Antonia Hodgson adventurous emotional mysterious tense medium-paced Plot- or character-driven? A mix Strong character development? Yes Loveable characters? Yes Diverse cast of characters? Yes Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated 5.0 ⭐ I had high expectations for the book, with just the blurb but Hodgson delivered. More than that even, I was amazed beyond my expectations. She took the tradition of a royal succession and almost reinvented it into a weird mix between democracy and monarchy. Furthermore, the concept of factions in fantasy is nothing new but somehow she presents it in an incredibly refreshing way. The gradual and subtle elevation of stakes is another front in which I applaud her. We go from a simple murder mystery to something so much more. Unrelated to the book itself but Daphne Hodgson does a wonderful job with bringing the characters to life. They're so animated and natural that I can't help but commend her too. 10/10 would recommend you give it a read. I will for sure be picking up and reading the sequels. Yes 4.25 ⭐ Was initially somewhat scared after I picked up the book because the writing quality was semblant of YA. It however overcame those reservations of mine. It's YA in the sense Rick Riordin is YA, technically suitable for that audience but attaching the YA tag to his work would be staining it (due to most YA books being rubbish.) I thoroughly enjoyed myself, especially because it's much more light hearted than what I usually go for. Finished the entirety of the book in 2 days :D

48% of the way in, technically it isn't labeled YA but current thoughts is that it reads like YA but done well. A bit like how Rick Riordin's books read.
