"No, no, no, no," says Topaz as she tries to pry apart her pet's mouth. "Spit it out, Numby, these aren't for you. I don't even know what's in them, and Ratio is only a human medical doctor." Snippet continues (part 2): "Please don't worry, Miss Topaz," says Aventurine, moving to kneel beside her. "I made sure to get something that your little friend could also enjoy. The warp trotters of Blue Hour love these particular cakes, so I can assure you they're perfectly safe." Finally, Topaz lets go of the struggling trotter, who seizes the opportunity to gulp down the remaining bite, and she slumps back in relief. "Really?" Aventurine nods. "Promise." Topaz studies him for a moment, considering, then dusts the crumbs off from her lap. "Well, I have to apologize for Numby's rude interruption—this one is usually better behaved." She shoots the creature a disapproving glare, and it has the decency to look cowed. "Anyway, let's get back to what we were doing." Snippet continues (part 3): The three of them return to the couches and the three remaining cakes. Aventurine is about to take a bite of his when a plaintive whine interrupts him. "Numby, we just went over this!" Topaz exclaims. Aventurine gazes down at the little black trotter begging at his feet. "Sorry, friend, but your owner is right—no more treats for you." He sets his plate down on his other side, out of grabbing range, and reaches out to ruffle the warp trotter's ears. "Glad you enjoyed the ones you did get to eat, though."
