I expect the impact of lost customers and reputational damage will be much costlier than free. I wonder how many of their clients include questions about how recent their last security incident was in their vendor risk assessments (and if they always respond truthfully).

Email was widely in use even before the Gmail beta launched in 2004. Free webmail services like Hotmail, Yahoo were already available, and ISP accounts typically included email. But it seems unlikely people would have used it to submit scanned versions of signed submissions for the birthday book.
